I was sweating from head to toe, but I couldn't show it. I felt my Chanel No. 5 evaporating my skin, and my Louboutins were slippery. I tried not let my hands shake, or my Michael Kors wristwatch would jingle against the charm bracelet my father bought me before I left for school. Questioning was the worst part of pledging, even worse the humiliating hazing.
“What are your strengths?” Jade asked, looking up from her clipboard and smirking at me.
“Singing,” I said, “and dancing, and acting, and…” I bit my lip, “manipulating people.”
Jade snorted, “I’m sorry… did you say, manipulating people?”
I shrugged, smirking, “yes.”
“What do you mean by that?” she asked.
I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees, “have you ever wanted something so bad, /so bad/, that you would do anything? Like I don’t know, for instance, sleep with a director for a part? I mean,” I leaned back, “not saying I ever did that…”
They laughed; I went along with it.
“So then, what are some of your weaknesses?” she asked, crossing her legs.
“Hmm…” I thought for a moment. I shrugged, “none.”
Hollie snorted, “you have nothing wrong you? At all?”
I smiled, “I’d like to think so. I mean…” I looked down at myself, “look at me.”
I glanced around the room and through the glass doors of the parlor. I could see the other pledges sitting in lines, waiting for their turn. Skinny, pathetic, little girls. They were all my age, but definitely not on my level.
“So you think your better than everyone else?” Noelle asked, “really, why do you want to be in the sorority? So you can brag to your friends about how great you are?”
I smiled, “Of course not! Who could be better than you? I’m not the best, but out of these pledges,” I lowered my voice, “I am /obviously/ your best bet. Why do I want to be here? The answer is obvious. You girls need me. I simply belong.”
They looked at each other. Jade smiled, “okay.”
I shrugged, “okay?”
“Okay… you’re in.”
I almost exploded with excitement, but I kept my cool. I smirked, “so, that’s all?”
“On one condition,” Hollie said, leaning forward, “you use supposed exploitation skill or… you’re out.”
I grinned, standing, “trust me, you won’t be disappointed.”
